Citizen Science Brigade with Veronica Swain

 Grades 5+, Wednesdays, 4-5 pm

Session 2: April 5, 19, 26; May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31; June 7, 14, 21


Develop your passion for nature and science! Guided by Naturalist Veronica Swain, study different types of birds, frogs, plants, and even bats. Embark on a new mission each week, gathering information from our sanctuary for use in scientific projects.

Teen Volunteer Club with Veronica Swain

 

Grades 5+, Thursdays, 4 – 5 pm

Animals rock. Whatever animals you love, Teen Volunteer Club offers a fun and supportive environment for connectinc with critters of all kinds. Work side-by-side with our Naturalists to learn animal care skills with hands-on training. Weekly activities include animal care, designing and installing exhibits, and maintaining the Earthplace private preserve.

Junior Staff with Becky Newman

 

Grades 6 to 12, Saturdays, 10am-2pm

2017 dates: Jan. 7, 21; Feb. 4, 11; March 11, 25; April 1, 22; May 6, 13

 

Share an enhanced educational experience with your peers while working with our Naturalists! Supplementing the school science curriculum, this program provides a solid base in the natural sciences through interactive learning and hands-on experimentation, as well as volunteer work. Participants are accepted to teh program upon successful completion of an application and interview.

Natureplace Docents
Age 14+, Saturdays, 12-3 pm

Natureplace Docents provide family-friendly activities for visitors to Natureplace and Animal Hall. Docents must have a passion for nature and work well with young children. Ability to provide excellent customer service to visitors and to commit to a regular schedule required. A stipend and training are provided.

Harbor Watch Internships
Academic year internship for high school students

Through our educational internships, students:

  • Learn field and laboratory techniques

  • Conduct data analysis and present findings

  • Develop critical thinking skills

  • Go on field trips

  • Use state-of-the-art research equipment

  • Work in two State of Connecticut-certified laboratories

    Work side-by-side with professional researchers and learn about water quality and environmental science in the field and in our state-certified lab. Each team of interns meets weekly after school during the fall semester and the program culminates in a student symposium! No experience is required. Topics include water chemistry indicators (dissolved oxygen, turbidity, surfactants, and more), indicator bacteria, and macro-invertebrates. 

  • 2 Sessions: Team 1 (Tuesdays) or Team 2 (Wednesdays), 3:30 - 6 pm

  • Dates: Weekly from September 20/21 – December 5/7, 2016
