September 8  - Camouflage

Camouflage is a mechanism that many animals use for safety. There are certain colors that blend in better than others. We will try an attempt at camouflaging a sticker animal on an index card. There will be colors hidden in the field - will we be able to find them all? We will play a game of opossum, not moving to avoid detection. When all is finished we will try to hide ourselves from predators as we enjoy some rounds of Camouflage.

GREEN EARTH SERIES LECTURE

Dr. Lloyd Irland, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies

"Copenhagen’s Disappointment - The Failure of The Copenhagen Summit on the Climate"

Please join us and host Dianne Wildman of Cablevision News 12 for what is certain to be a most informative and enjoyable discussion. What we learn will help us to better cope with what has to be done for the survival of our habitat.

Dr. Lloyd Irland, Lecturer and Senior Research Scientist at Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies will present a lecture on "Copenhagen’s Disappointment -The Failure of the Copenhagen Summit on the Climate". This presentation will outline for us how this conference, which he attended, failed to offer solutions to the major impacts of climate change on our environment and our world.

Dr. Irland earned his PhD from Yale University and has a great deal of experience dealing with major land use and industrial competitiveness issues in New York State and New England. He worked actively in climate change and forestry issues, and has participated in the U.S. National Assessment of Climate Change. His book “The Northeast’s Changing Forests” distributed by Harvard University Press. He recently completed and electronically-published volume entitled “Professional Ethics for Natural Resource and Environmental Managers”. His efforts on forest sustainability have taken him on study tours and lecture visits to China, India, Germany and the Ukraine.

His youthful exterior belies the depth and intensity of an old soul. Trevor’s music is an unconventional mix of acoustic rock, reggae and folk that serves as a vibrant landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics. Trevor spent his first 16 years in Hilton Head, S.C., and then headed to California to attend the Idyllwild School for the Arts to study classical guitar. He has toured extensively with many artists including Jimmy Cliff, Steel Pulse, Rusted Root, Matisyahu, Colbie Caillat, Stevie Nicks, Ziggy Marley and Keb Mo. Hall’s previous recordings have appeared in numerous films and television shows including his recording, “Other Ways,” which was in the Shrek the Third feature and soundtrack.

Earthplace, the Nature Discovery Center in Westport has one of the largest wildlife rehabilitation programs in the state, which takes in hundreds of injured wild animals every year with the goal of restoring them to health and releasing them back to the wild. Over thirty domestic and non-releasable wild animals reside in the Earthplace teaching collection where they act as species ambassadors giving visitors the opportunity to view these magnificent creatures "up-close and personal".

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Program and the Animal Hall help to produce life-long animal lovers. It is this commitment to animal welfare and appreciation that we wish to celebrate with our 2nd Annual Walk for Wildlife on Sunday September 26.

Buoyancy is when an object neither floats nor sinks in water. An object that is negative buoyant sinks while an object that floats is positive buoyant. After we have witnessed this we will experiment with play dough to make it sink, float and be buoyant.

STREAM EXPLORATION AND MONITORING WORKSHOP- for High School Students & Adults

Do you have an interest in learning about the health of our local watershed? This four-week workshop will explore how the health of a stream or river is measured, the kinds of parameters a scientist might look at, and why we all should be concerned.

Topics on physical, chemical, bacteriological and macro-invertebrate parameters (highlighting aquatic insects) will be explored. Hands-on water testing will also be highlighted with a special emphasis on nutrients and how field measurements can lead to the understanding and detecting of pollution. The correct procedures for sampling and the proper techniques for measuring dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, ammonia-nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen, fecal coliform bacteria and other indicator bacteria forms will be included. A discussion on field and laboratory instrumentation will be highlighted.

Adults and high school students who participate in this workshop may wish to volunteer for on-going monitoring efforts that are helping to assess the water quality of some of our local watersheds like the Norwalk, Aspetuck and Saugatuck rivers. This workshop would be ideal for teachers who would like to introduce the topic of aquatic biology into the classroom. Handout materials and refreshments will be included.

Saturday October 9, 16, 23, and 30, 9:30 AM to Noon
Students and member $45, non-members $75.

ANIMAL CARE VOLUNTEERS

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Program at Earthplace takes in hundreds of injured and/or orphaned wild animals each year with the goal of restoring them to health and returning them to their natural environment. Additionally, over thirty domestic and non-releasable wild animals act as species ambassadors in the many Earthplace educational programs. We are seeking volunteers to help provide the quality care these animals require.

If you are over 18 years of age, can commit to a three-hour shift once each week and are interested in becoming part of the Animal Care Team at Earthplace, we’d like to meet you.  Please call Linda Roberts at (203) 227-7253 for further information.
