Computer & Paper Recycling Day

Saturday January 13, 2007

Earthplace was the site of a large recycling effort to keep old computers and papers out of local landfills.

Local residents brought in tens of thousands of pounds of old personal computers and monitors to be dismantled and recycled by ComputerFox, a growing computer repair chain.  All computers, monitors and electronic equipment contain hazardous wastes such as barium, beryllium, phosphorus and lead. By properly recycling this equipment, these hazardous chemicals are kept out of landfills where they can leach into the groundwater. In addition, ComputerFox protects residents and businesses from identity theft by preventing one form of this increasingly common crime: data stolen from discarded or donated computers.  Rocco Frank, ComputerFox owner, says, “This service is absolutely necessary, as identity theft crimes skyrocket. As PC users replace old computers that just can’t keep up with newer models,” Frank said, “they have to get rid of their old computers, and more importantly, the personal information stored in those computers. We make sure and certify that all personal information is properly erased.”

Residents also brought in over 5500 pounds of old documents and papers to be shredded by Michael Smith of Secure Eco Shred.  After being shredded on site in their shredding truck, all the documents were sent to a paper plant to be recycled.
