Junior Curators

January - February 2007

This six-week after-school program covered all aspects of animal care as participants learned about and helped care for many of the Earthplace resident display animals.  Each week began with a brief presentation covering the natural history of specific groups of animals, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals and invertebrates.  The kids got to groom, clean, feed and enjoy many of the resident animals under the direct supervision of the Animal Care team.  They also enjoyed a special project building bird boxes for use on the grounds of Earthplace.

In preparation for the Dinner for the Critters fundraiser for the animals, the students created posters advertising the event, as well as crafted eagle pins out of pompoms for sale.  Two students even brought their knowledge of animals to the general public by appearing as guests on Cablevision Channel 12's Pet Talk, along with Linda Roberts, Director of Animal Care at Earthplace.

As the culmination of the Junior Curator program, the students hosted two animal programs for the public at the Dinner for the Critters and Junior Curators Present: A Critter Encounter.  All the students had the opportunity to share their knowledge of various Earthplace animals.
