Butterfly specialist Larry Gall, Curatorial Associate from the Peabody Museum of Natural History, led visitors on a walk around the Earthplace property in search of butterflies. The overcast skies kept the sightings low, but several species of butterflies were captured or sighted, including Monarchs, a Spicebush Swallowtail, an Orange Sulphur, a Skipper, and Cabbage White butterflies. Earthplace naturalist Margaret Ardwin caught and identified several types of dragonflies and damselflies. The visitors were surprised by the grip strength of the legs of butterflies and dragonflies. Two female dragonflies even started to lay eggs while they were being examined. Larry brought several display cases of different types of butterflies and moths. There were fun butterfly craft projects, and many informational displays about caterpillars, plants that attract insects, butterfly predators and the differences between butterflies and moths.
