Yuck Day

October 28, 2005

Owls, magic and all things yucky in nature were the highlights of the 5th annual Yuck Day at Earthplace.   A 3-year-old owl fan came dressed to see some owls up close that were presented by wildlife rehabilitators from Wind Over Wings.  Pat Mulcahy, Patricia Cebrelli and Grace Krick brought a great gray owl, a sawwhet owl, a great horned owl and a screech owl.  They answered information about each bird, and discussed issues relating to the health of owls in the wild.  There were also displays about other flying predators and a station about animal skulls and bones.

The Magic Genie delighted the audiences with his many displays of humor, magic and sleight-of-hand.  Special tricks involved a "flying magic carpet", sword swallowing and a guillotine to drop a blade through someone's neck.  Both children and adults were able to help The Magic Genie with his performance.

The entry area held displays of natural curiosities that could be found in area woods, especially local mushrooms, molds, fungi, earthworms and slugs.

There were opportunities to get up close to many wonderfully gross things, including bugs, worms, mushrooms, carnivorous plants, spiders, tarantulas and more.  Different activity stations were set up for information and examination, and there were many opportunities to create take-home crafts.
