Everything yucky and wonderful
was examined at the 4th annual Yuck Day event at Earthplace. Special guest Geraldine Griswold, "The Bat
Lady", brought a big brown bat and a little brown bat to help visitors
understand bats and their importance to the environment. Teenage arachnid
collector Georgio Tsangaris brought a large variety of tarantulas, scorpions
and insects for guests to examine. Earthplace naturalist Jim Hunter led
guided walks along the trails in search of mushrooms, fungi, worms, slugs,
toads, salamanders and other gross but great natural creatures. Junior
Staff volunteers concocted take-home slime, held cockroach races, helped
visitors identify animal skulls, painted faces and helped children create bats,
bugs and spiders to bring home. The beautiful autumn day was perfect for
collecting and identifying fall mushrooms and lichen. Geraldine Griswold, "The Bat Lady", and a big brown and little brown bat
