Earthplace held its first Migration Celebration to explore which animals migrate in the fall and why. Guest speaker Matt Hoyt, teacher and naturalist at the CT Audubon Center in Fairfield, brought a barred owl, a great horned owl and a kestrel, and talked about the characteristics of these birds of prey and which types migrated. Westport author Carolyn Arden read from her book Goose Moon, a children's picture book about migrating Canada geese. Stuffed animal mounts and displays in the Smilow Family Ecology Lab were set up to explain which types of birds and insects migrate, where do these animals migrate to, and why do they migrate. Kids could create several crafts projects related to migrating birds and insects.
