Nature Center Celebrates Name Change to: EARTHPLACE - THE NATURE DISCOVERY CENTER On Saturday, April 27, 2002 at a festive Earth Day Celebration, The Nature Center for Environmental Activities announced a name change. The new name and image were created to distinguish Earthplace from many traditional nature centers, since such a broad range of diversified programs and services are offered. Earthplace is a haven for those who enjoy nature. The 62-acre Open Space Wildlife Sanctuary with a two-mile connecting trail system, Museum, Native Plant & Wildflower Courtyard, Bird & Butterfly Garden and Animal Hall continue to offer people an opportunity to experience the most enjoyable elements of the natural world. The Mary Eason Swett Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Program remains dedicated to caring for injured or orphaned wild creatures. Earthplace continues to offer an enriching summer program and a renowned Preschool, with a stellar staff and a unique learning atmosphere. The Harbor Watch/River Watch, a water quality research and monitoring program utilizing its own state certified laboratory, continues its work as the leading water quality group in Connecticut. The Earthplace Environmental Outreach Program continues to address environmental education efforts at the elementary school level. The Junior Staff Program, which reaches teenagers, continues to educate and encourage youth to appreciate nature. The new, more vibrant and colorful identification symbolizes the dynamic interrelationship between the various forms of life found on earth and the environment in which we thrive. The colors communicate energy, enjoyment and pure fun – all benefits derived from the educational and entertaining programs and experiences available at Earthplace. More than just the name has changed. There are many recently completed as well as exciting anticipated improvements at Earthplace. During the past year, work was completed on a new entry drive and parking lot, the ecology resource room opened to the public for classes, the animal infirmary was expanded to provide better care, and air conditioning was installed throughout the first floor. Work is underway for the installation of a Universal Design Nature Trail, a trail that provides access to all people regardless of age or physical ability. Plans are in progress for a totally redesigned Exhibit Hall utilizing the Earthplace hands-on, interactive learning approach. It will feature the “Tiny Treehouse”, “Backyard”, "Explorer’s Clubhouse” and “Nature Lab”.
